Tatum Reaches 14,000 Career Points as Celtics Clinch Playoff Berth

The Boston Celtics celebrated two major milestones on Sunday night: a convincing 114-99 victory over the Charlotte Hornets and an official ticket to the 2026 NBA Playoffs. Led by the brilliant play of Jayson Tatum and a breakout scoring effort from Payton Pritchard, the Celtics handled the Hornets on the road to extend their winning streak to three games. Boston’s victory solidifies their position as the second seed in the Eastern Conference, further establishing them as a primary threat to unseat the top-seeded Thunder.

Tatum Makes History in Charlotte

Jayson Tatum had a night for the record books, scoring 32 points to become the ninth player in Celtics franchise history to reach 14,000 career points. Tatum was incredibly efficient, shooting 12-of-23 from the floor and 5-of-10 from three-point range, while adding 8 assists and 5 rebounds. Perhaps most impressively, he committed zero turnovers in 31 minutes of action, marking his 16th career game with 30+ points and zero giveaways—a new franchise record.

With Jaylen Brown and Derrick White sidelined due to injuries, Payton Pritchard stepped into a larger role and excelled, pouring in 28 points on 10-of-18 shooting. Pritchard has now scored 64 combined points in his last two games, providing the Celtics with the necessary offensive spark in the absence of their regular starters.

Hornets Fall to Play-In Pressure

The Charlotte Hornets (39-36) are fighting to maintain their hold on the 10th seed in the East, but they struggled to find their rhythm against Boston’s top-tier defense. LaMelo Ball led the Hornets with 19 points, but Charlotte’s shooting was ice-cold, finishing just 12-of-43 from beyond the arc. Miles Bridges contributed 14 points, and rookie Kon Knueppel chipped in 13, but the Hornets could not overcome a double-digit deficit that grew as high as 20 points in the second half.

Charlotte has now lost two straight following a five-game winning streak. Despite the loss, they have already secured a spot in the play-in tournament, though they will need more consistent shooting from Brandon Miller and Ball if they hope to make noise in the postseason. Charlotte travels to Brooklyn on Tuesday for their next contest.
