Unstoppable Jalen Duren Hangs 31 as Pistons Clinch First Division Title Since 2008

The Detroit Pistons reached a historic milestone on Tuesday night, defeating the Toronto Raptors 127-116 to clinch the Central Division title for the first time in 18 years. Center Jalen Duren was the undeniable force behind the victory, dominating the paint to the tune of 31 points and nine rebounds. Since star guard Cade Cunningham was sidelined with a lung injury in mid-March, Duren has elevated his game to an All-NBA level, averaging over 23 points and 10 rebounds over his last seven appearances.

Duren’s physicality was too much for Toronto’s interior defense to handle. He led a third-quarter surge where Detroit outscored the Raptors by 15 points, effectively putting the game out of reach. Rookie guard Daniss Jenkins also provided a massive boost, scoring 21 points and hitting a critical buzzer-beating three to end the first half. Duncan Robinson added 19 points from the perimeter, ensuring the Pistons (55-20) had the spacing necessary to let Duren work in the post.

A Resilient Raptors Effort

The Toronto Raptors didn't go down without a fight, led by RJ Barrett, who finished with 24 points and six rebounds. Brandon Ingram, returning from a heel injury, added 22 points in 32 minutes of action. Toronto’s young core showed flashes of brilliance, particularly Collin Murray-Boyles, who recorded a double-double with 14 points and 10 rebounds. However, the Raptors were hampered by a disastrous shooting start, missing their first 10 field goal attempts, which forced them into an uphill battle for the remainder of the night.

The Bickerstaff Effect

Coach J.B. Bickerstaff has transformed the Pistons into a defensive powerhouse and a disciplined offensive unit. Clinching the Central Division title—Detroit's first since the 2007-08 season—is a testament to the culture shift in the Motor City. Despite the absence of Cunningham, the Pistons have won seven of their last nine games, proving they have the depth to compete with anyone in the Eastern Conference. With the top seed in the East firmly within their grasp, Detroit is now eyeing a deep playoff run to match their regular-season success.
